Description

1st Edition. Quarter red cloth over pictorial boards. 16.7x12x1.1 cm. E.P. Dutton. 1939. 50 pp. 32 Black and white illustrations (including illustrated title page), illustrated end papers. Illustrated by Inez Hogan. Very good, ink gift inscription to half-title page reads “To Say, I hope you enjoy reading this little book as much as I did in giving it. With much love to a very sweet little girl, Mom Groyian”. Previous owner’s name (Nancy V. Cord) in pencil on half-title page. Scarce book, the story is about a young black child who laments being too little to help his family and grown up friends as they engage in daily labor “for the white white folks”, written in dialect with racist images and text. While this item is obviously no longer appropriate for a children’s library, this will be a great addition to the libraries of collectors of banned books as well as those who have a historical interest in early 20th century racist propaganda. weight: 0.4 lb.
