Three folding maps, six engraved plates, four of which are fold-outs. This copy is in good condition. The board edges are heavily worn with the the cover of the foredge worn through in some places, and there are a few chips to the leather on the leather on the front and back boards. There is a previous owners bookplate on the front pastedown, which is wrinkled and lifting from the boards. The wrinkle carries through to the front free endpaper and the first few pages. The back pastedown endpaper is also wrinkled and lifting, and the wrinkle carries through to the last few pages. There is a text shadow of the short title page and the title page on the opposing pages. The top headband is split and the lower headband is detaching from the spine. Some pages are edge-toned, some pages are lightly foxed on the edges, some pages are fully toned, and there is a short tear to the New Holland map. French language text, published on the brink of the French Revolution, containing accounts by several explorers, including Captain Cook’s famous first voyage (wherein he claimed Australia for Great Britain). Includes the following maps: ‘Plan de la Baye Du Bon Succes das le Detroit de la Maire” on a sheet with “Carte de la parte S. E. de la Terre de Feu…”, Carte deL’Isle de Taiti Par le Lieutenant J. Cook” and “Carte de la Nle. Galles Merid. ou de la Cote Oriental de la Nle. Hollande Decouverte et Visitee par le Lieutenant J. Cook, Commandant de l’Endeavor, Vaisseau de sa Majeste en 1770”.
